Curieux ce dimanche

Salut les curieux!

Dan, Karen et les deux enfants vont quitter Montréal très prochainement et ce sera donc leur dernier dimanche avec nous. Nous aimerions profiter de cette occasion pour faire un pot-luck chez Ron et Janice à 4h30pm. Ce sera un bon moment pour leur rendre hommage, mais aussi pour leur transmettre nos prières et nos bénédictions pour le futur.
Amenez un plat de nourriture et votre bonne humeur!

Un dimanche au cimetière

Bonjour tout le monde,

Ce dimanche, nous vous proposons de revisiter un "classique Curieux", soit la marche méditative avec trame sonore dans le cimetière Notre-Dame des Neiges.
Nous nous rencontrerons à la même entrée que d'habitude:entrée Descelles du cimetière (la plus près du métro Cotes des Neiges, sur Descelles près de l'intersection Cotes des Neiges et Queen Mary; à coté de la petite maison en pierre) à 14h.
Apportez vos Ipod/ mp3 player/ discman et écouteurs. si vous avez besoin d'un CD faites nous savoir...
On aimerais bien rafraichir notre trame sonore, mais comme le temps manque un peu, pas sure que ce soit possible... (on sait jamais: à suivre!)

This Sunday, we will revisit a "Curieux classic": the meditative walk in the Notre-Dame des Neiges Cemetery (with soundtrack).
We'll meet at our usual spot:the Descelles entrance (it's the closest to the Cotes des Neiges metro, on Descelles close to the Cotes des Neiges and Queen Mary intersection; next to the little stone house) at 2:00.
Bring Ipod/ mp3 player/ discman and headphones. If you need us to burn you a CD let us know...
we would love to be able to diversify our soundtrack, but since time is running out, that might not happen (but you never know: to be continued!)

Dimanche 26 avril - Baby shower!

Salut les amis,

 

This Sunday (April 26th) we'll be celebrating the imminent arrival of 2 babies - Dan and Karen's, and Donald and Amy's! The fun starts at 4:30 at Lauren and Denny's place (aka the Brazzeals' house) and we'll have a potluck supper together. The rule for the potluck is… bring something that you loved to eat as a kid. Think nostalgically!

 

Yes, this is a baby (actually babies) shower, but everyone is invited - guys and girls! If you want to bring gifts, here are some suggestions:

 

Dan and Karen have prettymuch everything that they need for the baby, but they'd love to receive some kids books in French, or gift certificates with which they could purchase such books (i.e. Archambault, Renaud Bray, etc.).

 

Donald and Amy would appreciate anything, really - clothes, books, diapers, etc. Second-hand stuff would be perfect. They already have lifejackets for their baby. (??) 

 

Another gift option - yummy food to stock their freezers for the post-birth period!

Ce dimanche (le 26 avril) on va fêter nos deux couples qui attendent bientôt des bébés - Dan et Karen, et Donald et Amy! On se réunira à 16h30 chez Lauren et Denny (c'est-à-dire, chez les Brazzeals) pour un souper potluck extraordinaire. Le réglement pour le souper potluck est le suivant: il faut amener un plat que vous avez adoré lorsque vous étiez enfant. Faites appel à votre nostalgie!

 

Oui, il s'agit d'un "shower" de bébé(s), mais tout le monde est invité - autant les gars que les filles. Si vous voulez offrir des cadeaux, voici quelques suggestions:

 

Dan et Karen ont tout ce qu'il faut pour accueillir leur bébé, mais ils auront besoin de livres pour enfants en français, ou de certificats cadeaux avec lesquels ils pourront en acheter (pour Archambault, Renaud Bray, etc.)

 

Donald et Amy ont besoin de pas mal tout - des vêtements, des livres, des couches, etc. Des trucs usagés seraient l'idéal. Ils n'ont pas besoin de vestes de sauvetage, car ils en ont déjà 2 pour leur bébé! (??)

 

Une autre idée de cadeau = des plats préparés à congeler!

Dimanche 1er mars

Quoi? Un souper potluck (les hôtes feront une soupe) et une discussion autour d'un livre
Quand? Ce dimanche, le 1 mars à 16h30
Où? chez Donald et Amy - 1250 rue Brown (metro Jolicoeur). À partir de la station Jolicoeur, vous pouvez prendre l'autobus 112 et sortir à l'intersection de Berling et Brown. Vous pouvez aussi marcher à partir du metro (10-15 minutes). Il faut traverser le pont, tourner à droite sur Champlain et ensuite à gauche sur Brown.

So we're thinking that we will be doing a book-burning of sorts on Martin Buber's "I and Thou". Curieux has been talking a lot about how we should be interacting with the world around us, particularly our environment. Buber has some interesting thoughts on how we should be shaping our interactions with the people around us, and we've been reminded of the book we found at a garage sale several years ago now...

We will make up a pot of soup for Sunday (start time 4:30) so people can contribute salad, bread, dessert, or whatever comes to mind.

Our address is 1250 Rue Brown, Verdun. For those people relying on public transportation the nearest stop is Jolicouer on the green line. From Jolicoeur you can take Bus #112 and get off at the intersection of Berling and Brown. You can also walk from the metro, it's about a 10 minute stroll. Take the right hand door out of the metro station, walk across the bridge and turn right on Champlain. Follow Champlain for about 10 minutes and then turn left on Rue Brown. bon voyage party

Our beloved Dave and Sanan are heading to the USA for 6 months starting December 1st. You are invited to a BON VOYAGE PARTY this SATURDAY starting at 5pm chez Julien, Andrea and Dorothée.

The theme of the party will be all things related to Montreal / Quebec / Canada (we have to remind them of all they'll be missing!) so please bring food, costumes, objects, etc. that are related to our city / province / country.

Also, Dave and Sanan have requested that we all write down some memories (nostalgic, happy, sad, funny, whatever) that they'll be able to take away in a treasure box, so bring that too. You could even include photos, a card, or anything else you feel they'll need to remember us all!

Special guest and performer: Jean Paul Samputu

“A winner of the prestigious Kora Award (the "African Grammy") in 2003, Samputu travels the world as a cultural ambassador for Rwanda, bringing to his audiences not only traditional African singing, dancing, and drumming, but also a profound message of peace and reconciliation. A survivor of the genocide in Rwanda, Samputu takes us to the most positive place of humanity through his spirit and graciousness. More than a talented and inspiring musician, Samputu is a model for anyone who wants to make a difference in this world today.”

Jean Paul travels internationally, rubs shoulders with ambassadors, visits the U.N., performs in all kinds of festivals and on all kinds of stages.  He now lives in Montreal with his wife and family. He sponsors a choir of 12 Rwandan orphans (the Mizero Project) who will visit here in the coming months. Our curieux friend Lynn Beaudin has become his manager. She helped arrange this opportunity for us to get to know him and to hear his music and his story in this intimate, cozy (OK – we admit it: “kinda makeshift”) venue.

Martine's CHOCO Party

Here are the details about Martine's CHOCO party this saturday, nov. 8th ( anytime after 6:30 p.m.)

I will be playing a set of my music which will include a stand up bassist a jazz saxophonist and even perhaps a violinist ( Joel!).

 

I hope to complete the recording of my professional CD sometime in the next year.  A large percentage of the proceeds of the sale of the CD ( once it is finished) will be used to support Charles and Delores in Africa and their work at Essa, and Isaiah 40 Foundation ( a Christian counselling center here in Montreal) all donations will be issued an income tax receipt.

2 Nov Gaufres/Waffles

Ce dimanche, le 2 novembre, à 10h30, les curieux se réuniront chez les Brazzeals pour un brunch aux gaufres avec sirop d’érable. SVP, apportez des fruits frais pour mettre au dessus.

Anne desRoberts sera avec nous. Il va bientôt à San Francisco pour passer quelques semaines avec le gang de Mark Scandrette.  Elle nous parlera de ses projets.

En plus, on (David et Sanan) commençons déjà à apprécier chaque moment qu’on a avec chacun de vous avant de notre voyage prolongé (6 mois) aux EU en décembre.

Thanksgiving weekend

Ce dimanche, le 12 octobre, les curieux se rejoindront aux communautés Emerge et Agapé pour un délicieux souper « pot-luck » pour le jour d’action de grâces.  Notre célébration inclura aussi des moments pour réflexion et expressions de gratitude. Tout commencera à 17h à « l’undercroft. », le sous-sol de Christ Church Cathedral sur la rue Ste-Catherine.

Voici les indications:
Au coin nord-est des rues Ste-Catherine et University, entrez dans la porte des Promenades de la Cathédrale.  Prenez l’escalier sur votre droit (pas l’escalier roulant), et descendez la moitié. La porte de « l’undercroft » sera à votre droit.

This Sunday, October 12, curieux will join with the Emerge and Agapé communities for a delicious pot luck Thanksgiving supper.  Our celebration will also include some time for reflection and expressions of gratitude. Everything starts at 5 pm at the “Undercroft,” the basement of Christ Church Cathedral on Ste. Catherine.

Here are the directions:
At the north-east corner of Ste Catherine and University, enter the door for Les Promenades de la Cathédrale.  Take the stairs on the right (not the escalator), and go halfway down.  The entrance to the undercroft will be on the right.

Bring some good food and a thankful spirit.

This Sunday (Oct 5), there’s a screening of the documentary The World According to Monsanto (with subtitles/sous-titré) in the Brazzeal’s living room/ improvised home theatre.  Doors open at 6 pm, and the lights go down at 6:30, so try to locate your seats by then. Popcorn and fruit juice will be available in the lobby at intermission.

The newly released DVD is a France-Canada production made by the award-winning French filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin (along with two ONF producers.) Their three years of work on four continents exposes Monsanto as “the world's poster child for malignant corporate influence in government and technology.” Here’s some of what’s been said about the project:  “….The World According to Monsanto, features a company that sets a dangerous new standard. From Iowa to Paraguay, from England to India, Monsanto is uprooting our food supply and replacing it with their patented genetically engineered creations. And along the way, farmers, communities, and nature become collateral damage.”  The Gazette predicts the movie "will freeze the blood in your veins." The Hour says “it's a horrifying enough picture to warrant fury."

Coming soon:  The next Sunday night (Oct 12), curieux will celebrate Thanksgiving together with the Emerge and Agapé communities. There’ll be a shared potluck meal along with a shared emphasis on thankfulness at the Emerge Undercroft starting at 5pm.

Rethinking Gratitude

A few months ago, I read something that has changed the way I think about gratitude and thanksgiving. Before it was rather passive, a nice thing to do from time to time - at least once a year while we eat a big meal. But even then my gratitude seems to focus on the intangible, or relationship but rarely “things”.

Brian McLaren in his book “Everything Must Change” says this on page 212 - “Catholic philosopher Josepf Pieper remarks that happiness is indeed to be had from things, but only things that are contemplated or appreciated. The pursuit of more things - to the point of “gaining the world” - distracts one from contemplating or appreciating what one already has, and therefore guarantees that one lacks happiness. So in this regard, gratitude becomes an act of defiant contemplation, expressing rebellion against the thousands of advertisements a year that tell you to want what you don’t have, and not appreciate what you already have.“

So in the next couple of weeks may I suggest that you take a few minutes to write down (or doodle pictures of) “things” that you have, and as you list them, contemplate them and appreciate them. Think to yours self as you use these “things” that 1. they’re good enough, 2. that you don’t need to replace it, 3. and that you’re glad you can ignore every commercial that encourages you to buy another one of these “things”.

Un événement très apprécié

Ce dimanche, le 28 septembre, les curieux se réuniront pour un de nos événements les plus appréciés.  C’est un temps pour écouter la sonore musicale de nos vies chez Joseph et Claudia. Tout le monde doit apporter un CD d’une musique qui a touché votre esprit récemment ou une qui vous rappelle un temps spirituel dans votre vie.

Cette fois, on ne sera pas au loft mais dans leur propre maison accueillante avec un grand jardin. Il y aura un souper « pot-luck », donc apportez vos plats préférés pour accompagner votre musique préférée. Ça commence à 16h30.

Aussi, n’oubliez pas les Journées de la Culture cette fin de semaine – beaucoup d’activités culturelles, portes ouvertes, etc :

A favorite event

This Sunday, Sept 28, curieux will come together for one of our favorite events.  It’s time to listen to the “musical soundtrack of our lives” at Joseph and Claudia’s.

Everyone should bring a CD of a song or piece of music that has touched you spiritually recently or one that reminds you of a spiritual time in your life.

This time we won’t be in their loft but in their very own cozy home with the big backyard. We’ll have a potluck supper too, so bring some favorite foods to accompany your favorite music. Start time is 4:30. 

Also, don’t forget the Journées de la Culture this weekend – lots of free cultural activities, open houses, etc :

14 Septembre

Vous êtes tous invités chez les Brazzeal ce dimanche, le 14 septembre.  Sanan est en train de chercher une bonne recette pour un gros pot de soupe.  SVP apportez du pain, du fromage, une salade ou un dessert pour compléter le menu.
